PrideStories: Peggy Weyer

As part of this year's Pride Fest preparations, the Pride Fest committee and the UPCenter of Champaign County would like to focus on stories from the community and why Pride is so important to Central Illinois.

"My name is Peggy Weyer. I live and work in Urbana, Illinois. I was born and raised in this town. Raised in a Baptist family, I understood from a very young age that I was different. There was nobody else like me and at times I felt very secluded, and more often than not, this town made me feel even more caged. My story, like many others, has been hard time and time again. I am writing to tell you two things. First and foremost, thank you for bringing [Pride] to the Champaign-Urbana area. It is needed so badly among the youth and adults alike."

Peggy's mother Mada also appreciates the value of Pride in a place like Champaign-Urbana.

"When my daughter came out at 16, it really wasn't much of a surprise. This was not a choice she made at 16, it's who she is and always has been, since the day she could form the words, 'I'm not wearing that dress!' I appreciate the help the Up center has given us on our journey, and all the people in our life that know love, unconditionally."
