Man UP

This a peer-facilitated group for GBTQ men. We meet every Tuesday from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. On the first and third Tuesdays of the month, the group meets in a peer support setting with focused discussions on topics such as the coming out process, developing friendships within the community, dating, and more. On the second Tuesday of the month, the group meets in a social setting for casual discussion, games, and more. On the last Tuesday of the month, a movie is shown with a discussion that follows. This group is geared towards adult men ages 18 and up.

This is Dennis' third time living in Champaign, 20 years this stretch. Him and his partner, Joel, have been together 14 years and are dads to Grace who will soon be turning 14. Dennis grew up in Camargo and attended Villa Grove Public Schools, Parkland College, SIU-Carbondale, College of Education, and University of Illinois School of Social Work. He came out at the age of 27 while in grad school, and participating in a group at McKinley Presbyterian Church was life changing and life saving. During his respites from life in Champaign, he has enjoyed the adventure of staring over in Mesa, AZ and Santa Monica, CA. He has learned the value of volunteering and the importance of giving back to the community from his grandmother, Faye. Dennis is a LCSW and has been a Counselor at Parkland College for the past 7 years. He looks forward to continued growth and enjoyment from his work with The UP Center.

Joel is a Champaign County native and in a same-sex partnership for 14 years. He enjoys time with his partner Dennis and their daughter, garage sales, friends, and great food! Joel has been employed for the last 21 years as the Credit Executive for a local HVAC distributor. He focuses much of his attention on energies in bridging gaps/distrust between American main line church denominations and the LGBTQ community.

Kevin is the President and CEO of The Cutting Ed, Inc., an educational consultig company. He is completing his Doctorate of Education degree in Education with an emphasis in Instructional Technology and Distance Education. Kevin has served on the board of directors for another community center serving the LGBTQA community in California and is excited to be sharing that experience to help do the same in Champaign County.
